Kim R. is 51 years old. She is a mom, a CrossFitter, and one of many #SurvivorsInTheOpen.
Kim was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42. She had started to focus on her fitness before she was diagnosed by doing step aerobics and home workouts, but post diagnosis, fitness became a major part of her life.
"In my opinion, my fitness level reduced the impact, stress, and recovery time of surgery, reconstruction, and chemo."
Fitness has become Kim's emotional and physical outlet, and she says it was one of the few things she could could control while going through treatments and reconstruction. Even if she couldn't go to the grocery store or do errands, she always made it to the gym.
"I am so happy to be strong and healthy and love to see the benefits of working out both emotionally & physically."
She knows that being in the best shape possible better prepares her to handle all that life throws at her. CrossFit has helped her prepare for life this way.
Kim's been doing CrossFit for 6 years, and this is her 6th CrossFit Open.
She says that she's doing the Open because, "It’s great to test yourself every so often and I love to see how I measure up to the women in my age group around the world as well as the younger ladies in my gym."
Kim's goal for the open is to test her mental and physical fortitude. Her plan for the workouts is to give it her all.
"Leave it all on the floor each workout."
Kim's message to anyone on the fence about trying CrossFit is to "Give it a try! It will challenge you both physically and mentally..but don’t worry, you CAN do it. I know you can because I was like you when I started."
Kim also loves the CrossFit community. She says that the community is welcoming, helpful, and everything is so fun (except for burpees).
"Being in control of your fitness is empowering."
