Hello! My name is Kelsey Hackem and I have been part of the RAD Program since February 2020.

I was diagnosed with Stage 1A Triple Negative Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in March 2018. I was 30 years old. Being diagnosed with breast cancer at age 30 was the most shocking news of my life and I had no idea how it would impact me or what was going to happen in my future. One of the things that attracted me to Barbells for Boobs and the RAD Program was that it always met me where I was and it didn’t push me to do anything I wasn’t ready for. I was not part of any support groups after diagnosis and I reached out to Barbells for Boobs in March of 2018, but I wasn’t ready for that type of community.

“My favorite aspect of the Barbells for Boobs community is all the different types of physical activity that the RAD women participate in. From weightlifting, powerlifting, and CrossFit to bow hunting, running, and cycling, there is such a diversity of activity. I feel that this bring many different perspectives to issues that women face while undergoing treatment for breast cancer and I love that about this community."

Once I finished treatment I realized that while I was taking care of myself physically during chemotherapy and surgery, I forgot to take care of other parts of myself.

That is when I reached out to Barbells for Boobs and the RAD Program. Connecting with the RAD Community and all its amazing resources helped me heal both mentally and physically; just because treatment is over does not mean that the process of treating breast cancer is over. Mountain biking is a huge part of my life and being a part of the RAD Program has helped me gain confidence and focus while I am riding, which makes it more fun! It has also inspired me to get back into CrossFit again, which has reconnected me with a part of physical and mental fitness I have missed! All of the incredible women who are part of the RAD Program continue to inspire and amaze me and I feel so fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful community.
